Rampathon 2011: Volunteers Complete 16 New Ramps
Ramp recipients throughout the Puget Sound Region showed their appreciation as more than 250 volunteers, sponsors, donors and organizers participated in this year's Rampathon. These dedicated members of the Master Builders Association used their skills and resources to improve the lives of others in the community. Sixteen new ramps were constructed for some very deserving people.
This was the 18th consecutive year that our members hammered, sawed and stained their way through this unique event.
KING 5 TV ran a news story featuring a ramp built for Lula "Mamma" Martin in Seattle's Central District with several live and taped broadcasts. During a live interview with reporter Christie Johnson, Martin insisted she was 192 years old - and she stood by that story with a slight twinkle in her eye and a straight face. In truth, she is a very young 92 years of age.
Throughout her life, Martin has been a solid fixture in Seattle's Central District. In 1963 she had a dream of providing a safe place where young single mothers could bring their children. Unemployment was high in her predominantly African American neighborhood, poverty was rampant and the ones who suffered the most were children. A nurse by trade, Martin had a newborn daughter and two young girls she desired to stay at home with. She thought taking on one or two more children would be a way to help make ends meet and satisfy a community need. But as the neighborhood grapevine spread about the wonderful care little ones were receiving, more and more single mothers came knocking on her door. Martin didn't want to turn anyone away. Eventually she approached the leadership at her church and asked if she could utilize space in their facility. The leadership agreed, and the day care center grew. When the church decided to use the facility for other purposes in the 1970s, Martin renovated the street level of her home and moved the day care center back to its roots. Both she and the center remain there today.
Upon retirement, this amazing woman went on to found a feeding program for homeless at her church.
Now, almost 50 years after starting the day care center, the facility continues to provide care for the grandchildren, and in some cases the great grandchildren, of the children it served earlier. Todd Gits of Crescent Builds was pleased to have had the privilege of building a ramp that will allow Martin to return to church, get back to the homeless feeding program, go for walks with her children and the children of the day care center, go the grocery store and, most of all, enjoy the community she has called home for almost a century. Martin put it in very simple terms, "The new ramp is going to be a great help in getting in and out of the house. Just to get down the steps will be a blessing."
Each ramp recipient has unique history and story. Our volunteers take pride in the way they help their ramp recipient with access, safety, health, freedom and independence.
